How to identify RAM stick just by looking them
The two main types of RAM are
SD RAM
DDR RAM

DDR RAM
Ram sticks can be easily identified by just looking at them. Here’s is some difference.
SD RAM - SD stands for synchronous DRAM. this is older type of RAM. Mostly nowadays new system are comming with DDR RAM. an SD RAM is really easy to identify as it has two notches at the bottom and would only fit into an SD RAM slot.
DDR RAM – All new pc’s are noe comming with DDR RAM .It means double data SD RAM i.e. DDR RAM. Right now there are three standards od DDR RAM available in the market
DDR 1
DDR2
DDR3
DDR4 – It is expected to strike market somewhere in 2012.
To identify a RAM all you have to do is to look for a single notch at the bottom of the RAM stick. If the stick which you are holding contains only single notch then your are holding DDR RAM.
However to identify which type of DDR RAM you are holding is bit tricky.
A DDR 1 stick has a rectangular chips whereas DDR2 has a square chips. The notch position on both these RAMs is slightly off from each other, but its a tough to guess it. A DDR 2 notch is slightly towards the left from the notch positioned on the DDR1.

Comparison of notch position in DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 RAM stick
DDR2 and DDR3 can be easily identified as its notch is on the extreme as its notch is on the extreme left when compared with the DDR1 and DDR2.
